Images in art category consists of paintings and drawings from New Zealand and all over the world: from Rembrand’s self portraits to woodcuts by ancient Japanese masters, from Maori life scenes to drawings of local butterflies.
You can stumble upon works by Hendrik Goltzius, James Whistler, John Webber, Rembrandt van Rijn and Wenceslaus Hollar among others.
Collection is rich in nature scenes, indigenous inhabitants, botanical drawings of plants, portraits and landscapes.

This is because the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is in New Zealand and guided by New Zealand’s copyright law. It applies open licence to digital scans where original works are believed to be in the public domain in New Zealand.
How to find images which you can reuse in most of the European countries?
Focus on older items:
1. Go to the main page with all collection items (see section ‘How to find images?’)
2. Write in the search field: _meta.created:>1949
3. Select only ‘objects’ and ‘unrestricted reuse’ (you might want to exclude photography)
Search results you get are now more likely to be in the public domain in most of the European countries.

2. Identify all the authors and contributors
3. Find the death date of the last living author (dates are available)
If the last living author has passed away more than 70 years ago, most likely, his/her works are in the public domain in most of the European countries.
