Collection includes drawings of fauna, anatomical studies of humans and horses, lavish vases, medical instruments, skeletons and humorous sketches.

Images date mostly from the 18th century with a few drawings from the 16th century and more recent creations. Works are produced on paper using pencils and watercolours.

Engraving and etching techniques are prevalent as well. Author list includes Andreas Vesalius, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, George Stubbs, William Heath and many more.

How to find images?

1. Visit https://wellcomecollection.org/.
2. Choose ‘Collections’.
3. Enter a word (e.g. book) and click ‘search’.
4. Now you can remove this word and continue exploring the collection.
Please note, the website is still in development so many functionalities are currently not working.

Is the digital scan under an open licence?

Not all digital scans in this collection are under an open licence. Open licence is applied only to those digital scans where the original work is believed to be in the public domain in the UK (and most of European countries). Where digital scan is under an open licence, it is available to be downloaded in high resolution.

The website is in development and currently there is no filter to find images by open licence. 

You need to check each image individually:

1. Go to the image page
2. Scroll down and check if below the ‘Download’ button you can see ‘Public domain’ notice

Is the original work in the public domain?

Most of the original works in this collection, which are under an open licence and available to download in high resolution, are in the public domain in the European countries. 

Wellcome Collection is in the UK. and guided by UK copyright law. It applies open licence to digital scans where original works are believed to be in the public domain in the UK (and most of the European countries).

How to double check this? 

The website is in development and currently there is no filter to find images by dates. 

You need to check each image individually:

1. Go to the image page
2. Identify all the authors and contributors
3. Find the death date of the last living author (dates are available)
If the last living author has passed away more than 70 years ago, most likely, his/her works are in the public domain in most of the European countries.

1. Go to the image page.
2. Click on a magnifying glass.
3. Once an image is opened in a new image viewer, you can:

  • zoom in/out
  • flip
How to view image metadata?

Go to the image view. Here you can find: 

  • authors and contributors
  • subject
  • licence information
  • credit line
How to download?

1. Go to the image page.
2. Find ‘Download’ button.
3. This will give you 2 options:

  • full size
  • small (760 px)

4. A new page will open where you can save the image on your desktop.

How to attribute?

Artist name, Title, Date. Wellcome Collection. Open licence (e.g. CC0 ) + a link
